Six people were arrested and a dispersion prescription made during demonstrations and counter-protection outside a hotel used to house asylum seekers.
The Grand Manchester police said that the order, which covers the area around the hotel on Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield, would remain in place until midnight.
The Force said that two people had been arrested for suspicion of racially aggravated public order offenses, and a person has each been arrested for theft of police equipment, assault and indecent exposure.
Another person was arrested from the inside of the hotel suspected of having scandalized public indecency during demonstrations.
The six people remain in detention for interrogation.
The force said that there would be an increased police presence in the region, the order of dispersion giving agents the power to advise anyone who causes – or is likely to cause – harassment, alarm or distress to leave the area.
CH Insp Trevor Eaton said: “We will always respect the right to protest peacefully, while making sure to take the appropriate measures to guarantee that those who live, work or visit here may feel safe to do their daily activities.”
