The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on Wednesday September 10, her intention to put pressure for sanctions against certain Israeli ministers and to reduce trade relations with “Israel” in response to the devastating war against Gaza.

Speaking before the European Parliament, Von Der Leyen expressed his frustration in the face of internal divisions among the EU member states, declaring: “What is happening in Gaza shaken the conscience of the world … This must stop.”

The EU chief said that if the unit among the 27 Member States remains elusive, the European Commission will take independent measures as far as possible.

Von der Leyen has announced his intention to suspend bilateral support payments in “Israel”, while maintaining cooperation with civil society organizations and institutions such as the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial.

The Commission also recommends a partial suspension of the agreement of the EU association “Israel”, in particular with regard to the aspects linked to trade. However, all the actions proposed require a consensus of the 27 EU member states, a challenge, the von der Leyen has recognized openly.

“I am aware that it will be difficult to find majorities,” she said. “But we must all assume our own responsibilities.”

Mounting the number of civilian deaths and famine in Gaza

Calls come in the midst of growing international indignation in the face of the humanitarian disaster which takes place in Gaza, which is now approaching its second year.

The reprisal campaign “of Israel has since killed at least 64,605 Palestinians, mainly civilians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

The UN recently declared famine in some parts of Gaza, warning that more than 500,000 people face “catastrophic” conditions due to the continuous blockade and the destruction of infrastructure.

At least 393 people, including 140 children, were killed as a result of the Israeli famine campaign on the besieged enclave.

Despite international calls repeated to a ceasefire and humanitarian aid, internal divisions within the European Union have embarrassed the formation of a united policy.
