The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) held a meeting on Monday in Ramallah with chief editors of several Palestinian media institutions, including Wattan Media Network, to discuss the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in newsrooms to strengthen the Palestinian narrative and counter algorithmic bias.
The full-day workshop, led by AI trainers Mohammad Abu Maileq and Tamer Mansour, covered topics such as fact-checking, enhancing Palestinian digital content, and positioning AI as a partner rather than a replacement for journalists.
The session, opened by Nasser Abu Bakr, head of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, focused on how AI can be integrated into newsrooms to support journalistic work. Abu Bakr stressed the importance of Palestinian media keeping pace with advances in AI and using them to serve the Palestinian narrative. He also highlighted the exceptional efforts of journalists in Gaza, who have continued to innovate and document reality despite the devastating conditions of the ongoing war.
Shorouq Al-Asaad, Director of WAN-IFRA’s regional program, emphasized the centrality of the battle over the Palestinian narrative and the major challenges in conveying it to global audiences, especially amid widespread Israeli disinformation and incitement. She explained how AI can be used responsibly in producing and disseminating media content while upholding truth and professionalism.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Al-Asaad thanked participants for their engagement and expressed appreciation to trainers Abu Maileq and Mansour for their contributions to advancing the use of AI in journalism.
