Top Israeli officials, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who also oversees the prison services, continue to incite against Palestinian political detainees and enforce a systematic policy of torture, killings, and genocide in prisons, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) said Wednesday.
The PPS said the incitement coincides with legislative moves in the Knesset to pass a law allowing the execution of Palestinian prisoners and to establish a special court for Gaza detainees without judicial guarantees. These measures, already receiving preliminary approval, mark a dangerous shift toward legitimizing crimes against prisoners and formalizing executions.
Released prisoners, including those freed through recent exchange deals, report unprecedented brutality during arrests and detention, particularly since the Gaza conflict intensified. The PPS said evidence from returned bodies shows signs of systematic field executions of Gaza detainees and called for an urgent, independent international investigation.
Far-right parties in Israel, the PPS said, exploit Palestinian prisoners for political gain, using them as tools for electoral propaganda. Every election cycle, right-wing leaders seek to demonstrate harshness toward detainees. The PPS described these practices as entrenched policies within the Israeli state.
PPS and allied organizations said Israeli prison conditions reflect the broader conflict in Gaza. Officially reported prisoner deaths represent only a fraction of abuses, which include physical and psychological torture, starvation, denial of medical care, humiliation, and sexual assault, including rape.
The PPS urged the international community to form an independent investigation into crimes against Palestinian prisoners, including deliberate killings and field executions, which could constitute genocide. It also called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to resume prison visits and pressure Israeli authorities to allow family visits without restrictions.
Despite a recent prisoner-exchange deal, more than 9,100 Palestinian political prisoners remain behind bars, along with hundreds held in military-run camps outside the central prison system.
