President Trump on Friday hailed Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s surprising resignation announcement as “great news” for America.
“I think it’s great news for the country,” Trump told ABC News in a brief phone call.
“It’s great,” he added.
The president noted that Greene (R-Ga.) did not share her plans with him before his social media post announcing his intention to leave office on Jan. 5, 2026, and said he had no plans to speak to her.
“No, it doesn’t matter, you know? But I think it’s great,” Trump said. “I think she should be happy.”
Greene, who had been one of Trump’s staunchest supporters, drew the president’s ire after criticizing his administration’s handling of documents related to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and breaking with the commander in chief on several policy issues.
Last week, Trump withdrew his support for Greene and called on the congresswoman to mount a primary challenge before the 2026 midterm elections.
The president has indicated he will support Greene’s challenger.
“I have too much self-respect and dignity, I love my family way too much, and I don’t want my lovely district to have to endure a hurtful, hateful primary against me from the president we all fought for, only to fight and win my election when the Republicans will likely lose the midterm elections,” Greene said in her resignation letter.
“This is all so absurd and completely unserious,” she continued. “I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’ hoping that everything will go away and everything will get better.”
Greene’s departure will reduce the Republican Party’s slim majority in the House, where 219 Republicans and 213 Democrats currently sit.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), whom Greene tried to oust last year, was unaware of Greene’s resignation announcement, a source told NBC News.
A House Republican aide described Greene’s plan to resign from the Post as a “vindictive” move to deliberately “screw” the majority.
The White House and Johnson’s office did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
