Rayan Cherki chose the right time to complete his Premier League drought as his late strike earned him Manchester City a vital 2-1 victory at Nottingham Forest.
The France international had not found the net in the league since the opening day of the season, but his 83rd-minute goal gave Pep Guardiola’s side a sixth consecutive victory.
The three points took them to the top of the table ahead of Arsenal’s home clash with Brighton.
City looked like they would have to settle for a point as a resolute Forest caught them back when Omari Hutchinson’s strike canceled out Tijjani Reijnders’ opener, created by Cherki.
But the manner in which City secured another victory was a worrying sign for their title rivals.
Forest will feel battered as they compete with their opponents throughout the match, only to be defeated in the final 10 minutes.
They paid tribute to John Robertson before kick-off, remembering one of their greatest players who died on Christmas Day.
The Scot helped Forest win back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980 and was described by Brian Clough as “the Picasso of our game”.
If Clough’s famous team was full of talent, then Sean Dyche’s current crop is perhaps less enjoyable to watch.
But they were more than effective in stifling City in a first half in which neither team had a shot on target.
Forest also had the better moment, going close in the seventh minute when Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross begged to be touched home, but neither Igor Jesus nor Morgan Gibbs-White could connect.
The hosts defended well and repelled everything City had to offer.
But that changed three minutes after the restart when the visitors took the lead with their first shot on target.
A well-worked move saw Cherki slide into Reijnders and he fired a low first time goal under Forest keeper John Victor.
John had to make an exceptional save to keep the score at 1-0 shortly after when the Brazilian deflected Cherki’s shot off a post.
It was a completely different game and Forest hit back in the 54th minute.
Gibbs-White launched a counter-attack, which ended with Jesus removing the ball so Hutchinson could head home from 12 yards.

This allowed Forest to regain control and they pushed for a second, with a big chance in the 66th minute.
Neco Williams’ shot was palmed away by Gianluigi Donnarumma and right-back Nicola Savona volleyed the rebound from an acute angle well over.
The tide began to turn as City looked for a second and they too had a great chance.
After some flowing passes, Phil Foden’s footwork created a shooting opportunity and the net looked certain to bulge until John stuck out a leg and made a crucial save.
The winner looked inevitable and it arrived in the 83rd minute when a corner fell to Cherki from 12 yards and he drilled in a low finish which John was unable to keep out.
