Police have ended their investigation into the disappearance of a Royal Navy sailor 39 years ago.

Simon Parkes, from Bristol, was last seen in December 1986, when the ship he was serving on, HMS Illustrious, was docked in Gibraltar.

The 18-year-old radio operator did not return after a night out with his crewmates and the ship returned to Portsmouth without him.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police said, following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service, the investigation would be opened unless more information was revealed.

Mr Parkes’ disappearance was previously part of an investigation into killer Allan Grimson, a former petty officer jailed for life for the murder of two sailors and who served aboard the aircraft carrier.

In 2019, specialist teams, including forensic experts, returned to Gibraltar to carry out research and investigations alongside the Royal Gibraltar Police.

Police said officers would continue to support the coroner with their investigations.

Superintendent Adam Edwards said: “Officers have worked tirelessly to investigate the disappearance of Simon Parkes and find answers for his devastated family.

“The full circumstances of Simon’s disappearance still remain unknown, but police will continue to support ongoing coronial proceedings.

“As with any closed case, no case is ever closed indefinitely. If we obtain new information that provides new legitimate investigative opportunities, we will take additional action.”

Mr Edwards said officers were always keen to hear from anyone with information.

He said: “I know it was a long time ago, but if you remember anything strange or out of place please get in touch.”
