Police said the thieves took advantage of the “quiet Christmas days” to break into the building on Nienhofstrasse in the Buer district of western Germany.

The thieves are believed to have broken into around 3,000 safes containing tens of millions of euros, as well as gold and jewelry.

An image of the ransacked bank vault shows a circular hole punched in a thick wall with items strewn across the floor.

Witnesses reported spotting several men with large bags in the garage stairwell Saturday night.

Images from the scene reportedly show a black Audi RS 6 leaving a garage from which they escaped, in De-La-Chevalerie-Strasse.

The masked suspects were also seen inside the vehicle, which police said was 240 kilometers away in Hanover.

Gelsenkirchen police said they were alerted to the robbery after a fire alarm went off early Monday morning.

The thieves are still at large and no arrests have been made yet.

People potentially affected by the theft gathered in front of the Sparkasse bank on Tuesday morning.

However, they remained locked up and police ordered them to return home, according to local media.

The bank branch said in a statement on its website: “During the Christmas holidays, the customer safe of the Buer branch was broken into.

“More than 95% of customer safes were forcibly opened by unknown perpetrators”

This means the likelihood of customers being affected is “very high”, the bank added.

The statement continued: “Due to the extensive damage, customers cannot access this area until further notice.”

She adds that the contents of each safe are insured up to €10,300.

The bank asked its customers to check whether they had additional cover through their home insurance.
