Kris Boyd played for the Houston Texans before joining the New York Jets this year
Kris Boyd, a cornerback for the New York Jets American football team, was shot in the abdomen early on Sunday, according to US media.
The 29-year-old man is in critical condition in hospital, New York police told CBS News, the BBC’s US partner. The NYPD did not name Boyd as the victim, but a Jets spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that Boyd was shot.
Around 2:00 a.m. local time (07:00 GMT) on Sunday morning, police received a 911 call about a shooting in midtown Manhattan. Police responded outside an upscale restaurant called Sei Less.
An investigation is still ongoing and police have no suspects in custody, New York police told CBS.
“We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will make no further comment at this time,” a Jets spokesperson told the BBC.
Before joining the Jets earlier this year, Boyd played two seasons with the Houston Texans, following one season with the Arizona Cardinals and four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
The cornerback was on the Jets’ injured reserve after suffering a shoulder injury during a team practice in August.
New York Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson posted on X asking for prayers for his teammate.
“Lord, please hold your healing hand on Kris and guide him to health and safety. Lord, I ask that you help him get through this safely,” Johnson wrote.
Other fans reacted on X, praying for Boyd’s recovery.
