The two men and two women arrested Tuesday morning are from the Paris region and are aged 31 to 40, said prosecutor Laure Beccuau, whose prosecution is leading the investigation.

His statement does not specify what role they are suspected of having played in the October 19 robbery.

French media report that one of those arrested, a 39-year-old man already known to police, is believed to be the fourth member of the team suspected of carrying out the daring daylight robbery and is believed to be from Aubervilliers, a suburb north of Paris with which other suspects have links.

The three other alleged members of the so-called “commando” team have already been arrested and face preliminary charges of organized theft and criminal conspiracy.

Their DNA was found at the scene or on objects linked to the robbery.

A woman arrested in October is accused of complicity.

The loot, valued at around £77 million, has not been recovered.

It includes a diamond and emerald necklace that Napoleon gave to Empress Marie-Louise, jewelry linked to 19th-century Queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense, and Empress Eugénie’s pearl and diamond tiara.

Investigating judges filed preliminary charges against three men and a woman arrested in October.

The theft drew attention to the security of the Louvre, the world’s most visited museum.

The thieves took less than eight minutes to force their way through a window of the opulent Apollo Gallery, break into the jewelry cases with record cutters and make off with the treasure, descending on a freight elevator to meet riders on scooters who took them away.

The emerald-studded imperial crown of Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugénie, containing more than 1,300 diamonds, was later found outside the museum.
