The winger had called on his teammates to show fighting spirit or risk being seen as cowards in their fight for survival in the Premier League.
Martin O’Neill has reignited his old row with Matt Doherty, warning Wolves manager Rob Edwards to “not listen” to anything the Irish defender says.
Doherty made the news this weekend when he issued a rallying cry to his Wolves teammates, calling on them to fight for the remainder of this doomed Premier League campaign or else they will be remembered poorly as one of the worst teams in the competition’s history.
“Do we want to be remembered for fighting until the end of the season, or do we want to be remembered for being cowards and maybe taking the easy option and maybe trying to leave in January or letting other people take your place?” Doherty said after the defeat to Brentford.
O’Neill, who managed Doherty when he managed Ireland, is said to have not had the best relationship with the defender.
Appearing on radio this week, fresh from his spell as interim manager of Celtic, O’Neill had harsh words for his former player.
“If I was the Wolves manager I wouldn’t listen to a word Matt said,” O’Neill said on TalkSport.
“Matt is a brilliant talker, a very good talker, but he would like to play a little more. Personally, it’s self-absolving.
“When you do a lot of that as a player, generally speaking there’s not much behind it. Matt is a very good talker but he wants to play more. You’re a player who has two points in 17 games, two points in 51. It’s not enough.
“Matt didn’t play every game but he was captain of the team. Take responsibility and take a honest look at yourself in the mirror. Players can talk a lot, but if you want to talk, you have to walk the walk.”
