North Korea reveals progress on 8,700-ton nuclear submarine project #North #Korea #reveals #progress #8700ton #nuclear #submarine #project

North Korea released new images to state media on Thursday suggesting major progress in its nuclear-powered submarine program, a development that could significantly reshape security dynamics on the Korean Peninsula.

The photos, published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), show host Kim Jong Un inspecting what appears to be a nearly completed submarine hull during a visit to a shipyard.

The revelation comes as Kim sharply criticizes South Korea’s own plans to develop nuclear-powered submarines, calling them a direct threat to the North.

Images show an advanced stage of construction

KCNA said the leader inspected the construction of what North Korea describes as an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered submarine. The ship has previously been described by the regime as a “strategic missile submarine” or a “strategic nuclear attack submarine,” indicating that it is intended to carry nuclear weapons.

The project has been touted as a central part of its efforts to modernize and nuclear-arm the country’s navy.

The agency did not say when the inspection took place, but released images show the executive walking next to a massive burgundy-colored ship inside a meeting room. The hull appears to be coated with anti-corrosion paint and largely finished. Senior officials accompanied him and his daughter.

This is the first time since March that North Korean media have published images of the submarine, with previous photos showing only partial lower sections of the hull.

Experts assess launch schedule and capabilities

It is still unclear how operationally ready the submarine is. Still, experts say the images suggest substantial progress. Submarines are typically built from the inside out, meaning that a completed hull often indicates that major internal systems are already installed.

“Showing the ship in its entirety seems to indicate that most of the equipment has already been installed and it is about to be launched,” said Moon Keun-sik, a submarine expert at Hanyang University in Seoul.

He further added that the vessel could possibly be tested at sea within a few months.

A nuclear-powered submarine would give North Korea a greater ability to launch missiles from water, a capability that is difficult to detect in advance. This constitutes a major concern for regional security planners, although doubts remain about the heavily sanctioned country’s ability to fully support such a complex system.

During the visit to the shipyard, the North Korean leader condemned South Korea’s pursuit of nuclear-powered submarine technology, an effort supported by U.S. President Donald Trump. He called the South Korean push an “offensive act” that seriously undermines North Korea’s security and maritime sovereignty.

He argued that Seoul’s plans only reinforce the need for Pyongyang to strengthen its own naval forces. He said the completion of the submarine would be a “historic” step in strengthening the country’s nuclear deterrent against what he called enemy threats.

A nuclear-powered submarine was first listed in 2021 as part of a broader weapons development plan. This list also included solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, reconnaissance satellites and missiles with multiple warheads. Since then, North Korea has conducted a series of tests aimed at advancing these systems.

Ties with Russia and growing tensions on the peninsula

Questions persist about how North Korea sources the technology and materials needed to build a nuclear-powered submarine. Some analysts point to Pyongyang’s growing alignment with Russia, including its support for President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, as a possible avenue for technical assistance.

Although there has been speculation that North Korea could obtain a reactor from Russia, perhaps from a retired submarine, Moon said it was more likely that the country had designed its own reactor, although outside help may have been involved.

Separately, KCNA reported that Kim on Wednesday oversaw a test of a new long-range anti-aircraft missile fired toward the Eastern Sea. South Korea’s Defense Ministry had no immediate comment.

These developments come as tensions on the Korean Peninsula continue to escalate. North Korea has rejected renewed calls from Washington and Seoul to resume negotiations aimed at scaling back its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, which stalled after a failed summit with Trump in 2019.

Football: WRAPUP 1-Soccer-Arsenal beat Villa 4-1 while Chelsea and Man Utd both held on #Football #WRAPUP #1SoccerArsenal #beat #Villa #Chelsea #Man #Utd #held

LONDON, Dec 30 (Reuters) – Arsenal closed out 2025 in emphatic fashion, beating third-placed Aston Villa 4-1 on Tuesday to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers, who picked up their third point of the season, while Bournemouth took a point against Chelsea, forcing a 2-2 draw after a frantic first half.

Man United are sixth, tied on 30 points with fifth-placed Chelsea.

At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal slammed the door as they charged Villa, ending their club-record 11-game winning streak.

Goals from Gabriel Magalhaes and Martin Zubimendi early in the second half put Arsenal in control of a match that looked fraught with danger.

Gabriel scored the opener from a corner in the 48th minute before Martin Odegaard slipped in a pass for Zubimendi to score four minutes later. Arsenal secured the points when Leandro Trossard shot from the edge of the area before Gabriel Jesus came off the bench to add the fourth.

Ollie Watkins scored a consolation goal for Villa in stoppage time.

“I think it was amazing,” Jesus told Sky Sports. “It’s always difficult to play against them… The mentality of the team is really, really growing and every game is growing even more and I think we win today because of the mentality.”

Arsenal top the table with 45 points, while second-placed Manchester City can close the gap when they play Sunderland on Thursday.

Villa are six points behind Arsenal.

It took six minutes at Stamford Bridge for Bournemouth to shock Chelsea when David Brooks grabbed the opener. Cole Palmer equalized from the spot in the 15th minute and Fernandez put Chelsea ahead with a shot eight minutes later.

Justin Kluivert brought Bournemouth level in the 27th minute to grab a point, adding to the London side’s unenviable record of one win in seven league matches. Chelsea are in fifth place, while Bournemouth are 10 places below them.

MAN UTD FIGHT

Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee made the most of a rare start by putting the exhausted hosts ahead with a deflected shot from the edge of the area in the 27th minute.

But Wolves managed to equalize just before the break thanks to a header from Ladislav Krejci.

Patrick Dorgu briefly celebrated what he thought was a winner in the 90th minute, but it was flagged for offside.

“We struggled the whole game,” United boss Ruben Amorim said. “We lacked creation… the offensive fluidity was not there.

“We didn’t play well. When you don’t play well with the ball, you struggle without it.”

Wolves have three points from 19 games, 15 points from the safe zone.

Newcastle United’s Joelinton scored after 65 seconds and Yoane Wissa doubled their lead five minutes later in a 3-1 defeat to 19th-placed Burnley, who are winless in their last 10 games.

Josh Laurent pulled one back in the 23rd minute, but Bruno Guimaraes sealed Newcastle’s rare away victory with an injury-time goal.

Everton moved up to eighth in the table with a 2-0 victory over former manager Sean Dyche and Nottingham Forest thanks to goals from James Garner and Thierno Barry.

West Ham United drew 2-2 with Brighton & Hove Albion in a match featuring three first-half penalties.

Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta, from the penalty spot, scored before the break for West Ham, while Brighton’s Danny Welbeck struck from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute but fired another over the crossbar.

Joel Veltman scored for Brighton in the 61st minute to secure the draw.

There are four more games on New Year’s Day, including fourth-placed Liverpool hosting Leeds United at Anfield.

Gardai have appealed for information about a car they believe was used to commit a double murder in County Offaly earlier this month.

In an update they say they are continuing to investigate all circumstances surrounding the fatal fire which occurred at a domestic residence in Castleview Park, Edenderry on the evening of Saturday December 6.

Four-year-old Tadhg Farrell and his great-aunt Mary Holt died in the fire and a murder investigation, led by a senior investigating officer, was subsequently launched.

Investigating gardai have now launched a public appeal for any information regarding a black Kia Rio Saloon car, registration number 08-D-24363.

It is said that the two men who carried out the fatal arson left the scene in the vehicle, which was later found burnt out in County Kildare.

“This black Kia Rio was found burnt out in Tipper East, Naas, Co Kildare in the early hours of December 7. The Garda investigation team is satisfied that no previous registered owner of this car is involved in any way in this deadly attack,” a spokesperson said.

The Garda investigation team say they want to speak with anyone who may have information about any person or people who had access to the Kia Rio between October 7 and December 7.

They are also appealing to anyone with knowledge of the car’s location or activities between December 1 and 7. Anyone with CCTV footage or footage of the car in Kildare, Laois, Offaly or the surrounding areas is urged to make the footage available.
