Au début, je pensais que ce serait une tâche simple. Tyrone a eu tellement de footballeurs exceptionnels au cours du dernier quart de siècle que cette équipe aurait presque « choisi elle-même ».
Il y avait en effet pas mal de certificats : Pierre le Grand, Sean Cavanagh, Philip Jordan, Brian Dooher, Stephen O’Neill, Brian McGuigan, Niall Morgan et Conor Gormley.
Cependant, remplir les sept autres places n’a pas été un processus rapide, même si Peter Harte et « Mugsy » sont rapidement apparus comme des choix unanimes lors de mon processus de consultation avec quelques Mains Rouges.

1. Niall Morgan (Edendork)
Mentions honorables à John Devine et Pascal McConnell, mais Morgan est un footballeur exceptionnel. Pas seulement un gardien de but, même s’il est excellent pour arrêter les tirs et récupérer des ballons hauts.
Ses coups de pied placés dans le ballon et ses incursions vers l’avant ont ajouté des dimensions supplémentaires aux équipes de Tyrone.
Premier gardien Allstar des Red Hands (en 2021), il en a ajouté un autre avec une campagne fantastique l’année dernière, bien qu’il n’ait atteint que les quarts de finale de toute l’Irlande.
2. Ryan McMenamin (Dromore)
C’est définitif pour moi, même si certaines des manigances de « Ricey » sur le terrain ont fait hésiter les autres.
Comme me l’a dit le regretté grand « Big Art » McRory en 2005 : « Quand Ricey va-t-il recevoir son Allstar ? Cette année-là fut la réponse, une saison au cours de laquelle l’homme de Dromore a réalisé une série de performances puissantes.
Regardez au-delà de sa défense acharnée, le natif du Canada était un immense talent. Après avoir dominé son adversaire, il allait de l’avant pour marquer et prendre des scores.
3. Cormac McAnallen (anglais)
L’Anglais aurait sûrement mené son comté au triomphe senior de toute l’Irlande, complétant le triplé après l’avoir fait aux niveaux mineur et U21, sans sa mort tragiquement précoce en 2004.
Il était un leader naturel en tant que milieu de terrain défensif, mais avec un altruisme typique, il s’est adapté au rôle problématique d’arrière latéral en 2003.
Cormac a établi la norme pour un groupe de jeunes joueurs extrêmement talentueux, en veillant à ce qu’ils transforment leurs capacités en trophées. Son sang-froid et sa détermination ont fait de lui le « général » sur le terrain de Mickey Harte.
4. Padraig Hampsey (Coalisland)
Vous devez être spécial pour faire partie de cette sélection si vous ne faites pas partie des trois premières équipes gagnantes de toute l’Irlande et que Hampsey est dans cette catégorie. Un appel très serré avec Chris Lawn, mais le leadership de l’homme de Coalisland l’emporte.

Il a démontré sa classe au poste de cornerback en 2018, remportant son premier Allstar, et a ajouté son deuxième lorsqu’il a dirigé Tyrone vers leur quatrième All-Ireland en 2021.
Superbe marqueur d’homme physiquement puissant, il avait également la qualité d’avancer et de marquer des points.
Mon choix pour le footballeur de l’année 2021.
5. Peter Harte (Errigal Ciaran)
Suffisamment polyvalent pour jouer n’importe où sur les lignes demi-arrière, demi-avant et également en avant, il a définitivement démenti ceux qui suggéraient le népotisme lorsque son oncle Mickey Harte l’a sélectionné.
“Petey” a rapidement prouvé sa valeur et a remporté les Allstars en 2016 et 2021. Devant son cousin Davy Harte, Allstar 2008 et vainqueur de deux All-Irelands seniors, Peter offrant une polyvalence et une longévité bien plus grandes.
6. Conor Gormley (Carrickmore)
Les surnoms GAA apparaissent souvent tôt, mais Gormley a gagné le sien sur la plus grande scène de toutes. Son blocage pour empêcher un but de Steven McDonnell d’Armagh – footballeur de l’année cette saison – a été un moment majeur pour garantir que Tyrone remporte à juste titre la Coupe Sam Maguire à ses voisins.
A joué au milieu de terrain à certains moments en 2005, mais c’est en tant que défenseur tout à fait fiable que l’homme de Carrickmore a fait sa réputation. A remporté le Allstars à chacune de ses trois saisons gagnantes dans toute l’Irlande.
7. Philip Jordan (Moy)
Quatre Allstars racontent leur propre histoire. Le Moy Man était un modèle de cohérence pendant la majeure partie des années 2000, un superbe footballeur polyvalent. Toujours disponible pour la sélection, en tant que fan de Manchester United, il aurait adoré être connu sous le nom de PJ7, telle était sa poigne de fer sur le poste de demi-arrière gauche.

Impressionnant à l’avenir, mais également solide défensivement, son excellence constante a duré toute la décennie, remportant le Allstars à chacune de ses trois saisons dans toute l’Irlande et également en 2010.
8. Kevin Hughes (Killeeshil)
Placer Cormac McAnallen au milieu de terrain aurait pu évincer « Hub », tout comme l’inclusion d’Enda McGinley ou de Colm Cavanagh, tous deux désespérément sur le point de gagner une place.
Pourtant, presque tous ceux que j’ai interrogés étaient d’accord sur la présence du clubman de Killeeshil, une ancienne centrale électrique du champ central.
« Homme du match » lors de la finale All-Ireland 2003 contre Armagh, Mickey Harte a tenté diverses options pour le remplacer en 2005 après le départ de « Hub » en voyage.
De retour dans le mix en 2008, il a conduit Tyrone à vaincre à nouveau Kerry en tant que sous-marin en seconde période.
9. Sean Cavanagh (Moy)
Big Sean a remporté cinq Allstars de 2003 à 2013 et est devenu le deuxième Ulsterman à en remporter trois de suite en 2005, après Pierre le Grand.
Milieu de terrain très offensif, également capable de se démarquer sur l’aile ou sur l’avant, il avait le tempérament pour résister à un traitement très dur de la part des marqueurs.
Le « Seanie shimmy » a trompé de nombreux adversaires, menant score après score à exploser sur cette botte droite. Un free-taker parfois aussi et un capitaine déterminé.
Sean Cavanagh de Tyrone, Brian Dooher et Mickey Harte avec Sam Maguire et l’équipe gagnante de toute l’Irlande. Ils doivent recevoir une réception officielle à Stormont.
10. Brian Dooher (Clannan Gaels)
Seulement le deuxième Ulsterman à remporter la Coupe Sam Maguire à deux reprises, après la légende de Cavan John Joe O’Reilly.
Aussi dur que possible, et un excellent footballeur aussi. Il pourrait gagner la sale balle, puis la lancer par-dessus la barre à des distances et sous des angles scandaleux.
Capitaine qui a définitivement donné l’exemple, Dooher a été le roc sur lequel Tyrone a construit ses trois premiers triomphes dans toute l’Irlande.
11. Brian McGuigan (Ardboe)
Le meneur de jeu suprême, un homme avec une vision merveilleuse et la capacité de repérer les passes. Malgré toute sa créativité, il était également résilient, prêt à aller là où ça faisait mal et plein de travail, de course et de but.
La maladie n’a pas réussi à l’empêcher de jouer un rôle dans la finale All-Ireland 2003 (l’année de son seul Allstar). Il est revenu d’Australie pour amener Tyrone à sa meilleure campagne de tous les temps en 2005, remportant le prix de « l’homme du match » lors de cette rencontre décisive contre Kerry.
Il a également tiré les ficelles en 2008 et a été très malheureux que de graves blessures à la jambe et aux yeux aient gêné la dernière partie de sa carrière de joueur – mais il avait déjà atteint de grandes choses.
12. Mattie Donnelly (Trillick)
Un homme qui pourrait et voudrait jouer n’importe où pour son comté. Cette description s’applique également à Joe McMahon, mais l’homme d’Omagh passe à côté.
Mattie excellait au poste de demi-arrière central, d’attaquant droit et d’attaquant complet, donnant toujours la priorité à l’équipe, donnant toujours le meilleur de lui-même.
Capitaine pendant trois saisons, son attitude et son application ont été des exemples essentiels pour les joueurs des vainqueurs All-Ireland U21 2015.
Pour sa capacité d’attaque, Ger Cavlan a été plusieurs fois salué, mais le talent polyvalent de Mattie lui vaut cette place.
Le capitaine vainqueur de toute l’Irlande, Peter Canavan, est transporté sur le terrain de Croke Park par les supporters de Tyrone après la finale de 2003.
13. Peter Canavan (Errigal Ciaran)
Les bons joueurs ont un surnom, les grands en ont deux, seuls les génies en ont trois : « petit Pierre » est devenu à la fois « Dieu » et « Pierre le Grand ».
Farouchement combatif et résilient, un finisseur fabuleux, un convertisseur d’occasions glacial, comme l’a démontré son but guidé lors de la finale All-Ireland 2005 alors qu’il semblait arrêter le temps. L’homme vers qui se tourner pour les tirs au but et les dégagements également – notez la demi-finale All-Ireland 2005.
Inspirateur pour ses coéquipiers, quel que soit leur âge, Mickey Harte l’a superbement utilisé lors de la finale 2003.
A remporté ses quatrième, cinquième et sixième Allstars en 2002, 2003 et 2005.
14. Stephen O’Neill (Clanna na n’Gael)
Capable de marquer depuis des positions et des distances apparemment impossibles, sur n’importe quel pied, il était presque aussi fort qu’habile.
Ses performances en 2005 en particulier ont été sensationnelles, ce qui lui a valu le titre de Footballeur de l’année. A marqué 0-10 contre Francie Bellew lors de la finale nulle de l’Ulster cette année-là, et a été victime d’une faute de Ciaran McKeever pour la victoire cruciale lors de la demi-finale de toute l’Irlande.
De retour après une retraite forcée par une blessure pour aider à réaliser un autre All-Ireland en 2008 et a ajouté son troisième Allstar la saison suivante après des récompenses en 2001 et 2005.
15. Owen Mulligan (Cookstown)
J’ai envisagé de placer ici un joueur plus fonctionnel, mais “Mugsy” a apporté la magie qui a fait la différence, surtout en 2005, quand Armagh et Kerry formaient également des équipes incroyables.
A marqué l’un des plus grands buts jamais vus à Croke Park contre Dublin en quart de finale et a préparé son mentor Peter Canavan pour le but crucial de la finale All-Ireland 2005.
Le sourire effronté puis les reflets blonds donnaient une fausse impression – il ajoutait la transpiration à son inspiration.

A meeting at Stormont discussed the use of anti-terrorism laws to combat displays of paramilitary flags and murals in 2004, according to declassified files.
The papers reveal that a senior PSNI official said “comprehensive case law” could be developed within the courts to establish a “clear line between what is acceptable and what is not”.
A file held at the Public Record Office in Belfast includes the minutes of a meeting which took place at Stormont House on March 2, 2004, attended by PSNI representatives, civil servants and representatives from the Community Relations Unit (CRU) and the Community Relations Council (CRC).
The minutes indicate that a previous meeting concluded that a “community approach to the flag issue was preferable to a police-only response.”
Senior officer Gary White told the meeting he had had a discussion with the Crown Prosecution Service regarding the use of the Terrorism Act 2000.
The minute read: “Again, the question of what is and is not acceptable behavior has become an issue, but GW (Gary White) believes that the DPP is in favor of using this provision generally and this is easiest where a flag or mural illustrates an explicit level of support for a paramilitary organization.
“Obviously there will be areas where there will be doubts about what a flag is.
“GW suggested that this issue should be left to the courts and that comprehensive case law could be developed to establish a clear line between what is acceptable and what is not.
“He also reminded the group that there is great sympathy for the idea that what was acceptable during the worst phases of the Troubles may not be acceptable now.”
The minutes indicate that the meeting recalls a test case relating to the display of paramilitary flags in Hollywood, which resulted in the conviction of four people under section 13 of the Terrorism Act.
It was subsequently learned that the CRU had commissioned research from the Institute of Irish Studies at Queen’s University into the issue of flags and emblems.
The CRU’s Billy Gamble said “his preference was for the community to resolve these issues on their own”, but he felt there “had to be a threat of final sanction”.
The minutes state: “The group was clearly impressed by the approaches of the CRU/CRC and expects the outcome of the policy document in June.
“It is clear, however, that there will be times when the community simply cannot stop the paramilitaries from engaging in this activity.
“In such circumstances, the PSNI is content to have the necessary powers under the Terrorism Act to deal with the situation. In short, there is no universal policy that can solve the flag problem.”

Eddie Hearn, chairman of Matchroom Sport, has paid tribute to two men who tragically died in a car crash involving British heavyweight Anthony Joshua in Nigeria on Monday.
The victims were identified as Kevin Ayodele and Sina Ghami, while Joshua was taken to hospital with minor injuries following the collision.
The incident occurred on Monday morning on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, just outside Lagos, when a black Lexus Jeep collided with a stationary red Sinotruck commercial vehicle.
The accident claimed the lives of Ayodele, also known as Latz, and Ghami, both close friends and members of Joshua’s team. Two other men in the vehicle were said to have escaped unhurt.
Hearn, chairman of Joshua’s promotional company Matchroom, was among those who paid tribute to both men when news of their tragic deaths was confirmed.
“With the heaviest of hearts,” he shared in an Instagram post. “Two great men. Rest in eternal peace Sina and Latz. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with everyone.”
Boxer Chris Eubank Jr also shared a heartfelt message, saying: “Thank God our heavyweight champion survived this horrific car accident. And pray for the two fallen soldiers, Latz and Sina, and their families.
“I knew they both…were truly good men. Rest in peace boys.”
Slim Albaher of Misfits Boxing also paid tribute, adding: “Sending prayers for Anthony Joshua and the two brothers who died tragically in the car crash. I can’t believe Latz was one of the guys involved… he was such a good soul and supportive brother. Allah Yerhamu, may Allah grant Latz and Sina Jannah.”
Another fighter, Mutah Beale, also said: “From Allah we return sad and shocking news regarding the death of our dear brother Abdul-Latif following a car accident. May Allah have mercy on him and grant him Jannah, and may Allah ease this difficult time for his family. We also wish the champion a speedy recovery. »
OnestoplistDubai shared a touching message: “May Allah forgive your faults and grant you the highest level of paradise. Ameen. Nothing but good memories when we were together.

Contacts between the husband of former Irish president Mary McAleese and UDA leaders in Northern Ireland took on “a life of their own”, a British government official said in 2003.
Declassified files show Martin McAleese had arranged a coach for loyalist leaders to attend a golf outing, but they refused, fearing it would be “too much like a UDA day trip”.
A senior civil servant noted that “there were a few surprises” in contacts but that Dr McAleese was determined to expand the list of his “loyalist friends” to include the UVF.
One of the files released under the 20-year regime concerns Dr. McAleese’s efforts to force loyalist paramilitaries from the margins of the peace process during his wife’s first term as president.

The extent of his contacts is contained in a confidential memo written to the then British Ambassador to Ireland, Stewart Eldon, by senior civil servant Chris McCabe in September 2003, entitled “Loyalism and the Irish: Lunch with Martin McAleese”. Mr McCabe said he had a “private conversation” with Martin McAleese over lunch.
The memo said: “Martin McAleese is very candid about his contacts with high-ranking loyalists. Impressive in both their breadth and depth. Well aware of the potential pitfalls, but so far things have gone remarkably well.
“Determined to persevere for as long as possible, expanding the list of his loyalist ‘friends’ at every opportunity.”
Mr. McCabe added:
This allowed us to hear firsthand what Martin was doing: although we were already aware of much of what he told us, there were a few surprises.
The note stated that Dr McAleese had received a letter from “South Belfast UDA Brigadier” Jackie McDonald in February 2003.
“Once Martin verified that there would be no political objections to such a personal initiative, the first meeting was arranged. Since then, the meetings seem to have taken on a life of their own.”
The memo details a list of contacts, including a meeting in Áras an Uachtaráin “involving 50 unionists/loyalists who focused on cross-community issues”. It also included “several meetings with UDA brigadiers (including a “jovial” Jim Gray) and others in which Jackie McDonald was clearly primus inter pares”.
The note continues: “Social events, including golf outings, in which some or all UDA brigadiers and their associates were involved. On one of these occasions, Martin called for a coach, but the brigadiers refused him on grounds of collective security and because it would be too much like a UDA day trip.
“Alternative transportation in a fleet of minibuses was agreed; each vehicle was checked for ‘bugs and bombs’ before its guests boarded!”
The note said Dr McAleese had “admitted to being relatively innocent abroad”, but added that he was struck by “the sincerity of everyone he met and would tend to take them at face value until he knew otherwise”.
The note adds: “For our part, we welcomed his initiative and the progress that has been made. We said that, given the provenance of some of the figures involved and the need for transparency, accountability and inter- and intra-community equality, we could not hope to match his activities on this side of the border.
“But that shouldn’t bother him, quite the contrary.”
The memo was copied to Secretary of State Paul Murphy and other Northern Ireland ministers in direct power. The note concluded by stating that Dr McAleese also wanted to make contact with someone on the “military side” of the UVF.
It said: “To ensure the PUP/UVF stays on board, he would have dinner with the party’s chairman, David Rose, and secretary, Dawn Purvis, later this week.
“He hoped this would lead to direct contact with someone on the military side. He also has tentative plans for some sort of dialogue with members of the DUP.”
