With the arrival of December, family reunions, New Year’s dinners and social activities multiply, as does the traditional gastronomic offer.

While these encounters are a source of joy, they also represent a challenge for the digestive system.

Heavier meals, irregular schedules, increased alcohol consumption and increased stress can trigger discomforts such as heartburn, bloating, nausea or indigestion.

The gastroenterologist Marlon Rojasfrom the Equilibrium Clinic, explained that during this season there is a significant increase in symptoms related to three main conditions: gastroesophageal reflux, gastritis and colitis.

Gastroesophageal reflux tends to be intensified by the consumption of fatty foods, fried foods, chocolates and alcoholic or carbonated drinks.

These foods promote relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing stomach acid to flow up into the esophagus and cause a burning or burning sensation.

Gastritis, for its part, can be exacerbated by irritants such as alcohol, excess condiments, very acidic or spicy sauces, as well as by episodes of stress. Inflammation of the gastric mucosa causes abdominal pain, heaviness, heartburn and slow digestion.

Colitis, which includes both inflammatory and functional conditions (such as irritable bowel syndrome), usually presents with bloating, diarrhea, gas, or abdominal pain.

Changes in schedule, excessive consumption of carbohydrates, sweets and sugary drinks, and lack of fiber can trigger more frequent episodes.

“In clinical practice we see that many patients come to the office after the holidays with exacerbated gastritis, the product of several days of disordered habits. It is not a question of prohibiting what we like most, but of intelligently combining foods, moderating portions and avoiding overeating through social commitment”, commented the specialist.

Indigestion, known as dyspepsia, also continues to be one of the most common causes of discomfort. To prevent these problems, the specialist recommends maintaining conscious habits even during celebrations.

  • Eat slowly, promoting good digestion.
  • Moderate alcohol consumption and stay well hydrated.

Additionally, end-of-year stress can intensify gastrointestinal symptoms, so it is recommended to prioritize rest and relaxation techniques.

Dr. Rojas warns that if persistent abdominal pain, intense heartburn or repetitive discomfort becomes frequent, it is essential to consult a specialist.
