Arne Slot: ‘Special’ Florian Wirtz must rely on Liverpool’s decisive goal #Arne #Slot #Special #Florian #Wirtz #rely #Liverpools #decisive #goal

A week after recording his first Premier League assist, the Germany international – who was signed in a £116million deal in the summer – followed it up by scoring 89 seconds into Ryan Gravenberch’s opener.

The 22-year-old was the standout player in a team performance that went from dominant in the first half to nervy and fragile when Hugo Bueno reduced the deficit after the break, having revealed a persistent weakness from set pieces.

“I think I’m sure it was a relief for him,” Slot said of Wirtz. “I could see his reaction when he scored the goal and it was the same with his teammates, they were really happy for him.

“In football, perhaps rightly so, we are judged mainly on results and individuals are judged mainly on goals and assists and we sometimes forget what else there is to do during a match.

“I think he’s had a lot of good games for us, but I also think he’s getting better every game he plays for us.

“He’s getting fitter and getting closer and closer to his first goal and it’s no surprise he scored today.

“He will be the first to understand that one goal is not enough, so I hope he scores many more goals for us than this one.

“But I also liked his performance for a lot of the match today, I think he was special in many moments.”

It was an emotional afternoon for two former clubs of Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in July alongside his brother Andre Silva.

Jota’s two sons, along with two other young family members, were part of the pre-match presentation as they walked out with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Wolves’ Portuguese goalkeeper Jose Sa, as Jota’s wife Rute looked on.

“Difficult but in a way also special and enjoyable. The football world has shown how to behave in moments like this,” Slot added.

“Our fans have been incredible from the tragedy until today. Every moment, they have done what you would hope they would do in memory of him.

“Today the away fans showed that it’s not just about our fans. You know how special England fans are and today we showed that to the world.”

Despite a lively second half, Wolves recorded an 11th consecutive defeat and are the first Premier League club to fail to win any of their opening 18 matches.

“It’s another defeat so it’s difficult,” said boss Rob Edwards, who has failed to halt the slide, having regained control seven matches ago.

“I told the guys, ‘I’m really sick of this,’ and I know they’re hurting too, but I’m going to watch the game and take some of the emotion out of it and feel some of the good things too.

“In the second half, there was a team that was courageous and showed quality against a top team.”
