AL MUKALLA, Yemen – Saudi Arabia on Tuesday declared a UAE-backed separatist advance in Yemen a threat to Riyadh’s national security and called Abu Dhabi’s actions “very dangerous” as the conflict escalated into an open dispute between Gulf powers.

The Foreign Office’s strong statement comes after the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said it had struck a shipment of arms from the United Arab Emirates destined for separatist forces.

In recent weeks, Abu Dhabi-backed separatists seeking to revive the once-independent state of South Yemen have made considerable territorial gains after launching a blitzkrieg offensive in recent weeks.

Experts say their successes have embarrassed Saudi Arabia, the region’s heavyweight and the main backer of Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

The head of Yemen’s presidential council, which sits atop that government, declared a state of emergency and canceled a security pact with Abu Dhabi after forces of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) seized swaths of territory.

The STC is also part of the government, a motley patchwork of groups held together by its opposition to the Iran-backed Houthi rebels who control swathes of Yemen’s north and west, including the capital Sanaa.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, traditionally close allies who joined forces in Yemen against the Houthis, are increasingly at odds over the conflict unfolding on their doorstep, as well as the war in Sudan.

“The Kingdom (Saudi Arabia) expresses its disappointment with the measures taken by the brotherly United Arab Emirates, pressuring the forces of the Southern Transitional Council to carry out military operations on the southern border of the Kingdom,” the Saudi statement said.

He called them “a threat to the national security of the Kingdom, as well as to the security and stability of the Republic of Yemen and the region.”

“The measures taken by the UAE are considered very dangerous,” he said, adding that “the Kingdom emphasizes that any threat to its national security is a red line, and the Kingdom will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to confront and neutralize such a threat.”

“The fire is still burning”

Riyadh also backed Yemen’s presidential council’s demand that Emirati forces withdraw from the country within 24 hours, and urged Abu Dhabi to suspend its military and financial support for Yemeni groups.

Rashad al-Alimi, head of the Presidential Council, issued decrees on Tuesday announcing a 90-day state of emergency and canceling a security pact with the United Arab Emirates following the separatists’ advance.

Earlier, the Saudi-led coalition said it had targeted a large quantity of weapons and combat vehicles sent by the UAE to secessionist forces.

The coalition struck two ships carrying “a large quantity of weapons and combat vehicles to support the forces of the Southern Transitional Council”, the official Saudi news agency SPA reported.

“Given the danger and escalation posed by these weapons…, coalition air forces this morning conducted a limited military operation targeting the weapons and combat vehicles that had been unloaded from the two ships at the port of al-Mukalla,” the statement said.

The ships arrived from the Emirati port of Fujairah, SPA said, adding that the operation was carried out in accordance with international humanitarian law and without collateral damage.

A port official said an evacuation warning was received at 4 a.m. local time.

“The evacuation was completed and the strike took place a quarter of an hour later in a land area inside the port. The fire is still burning,” the official said on condition of anonymity, not being authorized to speak to the media.

“Unacceptable to God”

Abdullah Bazuhair, whose house overlooks the port, showed AFP the damage to his property, with windows torn from the walls and glass strewn across the ground.

The strikes were “unacceptable in the eyes of God”, he said, adding that “the children were terrified and the women frightened”.

Footage filmed by AFP at the port showed dozens of parked military vehicles and pick-up trucks, several of which were on fire and smoking as workers hosed them down.

The Saudi-led coalition had warned it would support the Yemeni government in any military confrontation with separatist forces and urged them to withdraw “peacefully” from recently seized territories in Hadramawt and Mahra governorates.

Tuesday’s strike came days after Saudi air raids on separatist positions in resource-rich Hadhramaut and after Washington called for restraint in the conflict.

In recent days, hundreds of Yemeni tribesmen gathered in Aden to demand STC leaders announce the independence of South Yemen, according to the independent Aden channel, affiliated with the separatists.

A Yemeni military official said Friday that about 15,000 Saudi-backed fighters were massed near the Saudi border but had not received orders to advance into separatist-held territory.

Football: WRAPUP 1-Soccer-Arsenal beat Villa 4-1 while Chelsea and Man Utd both held on #Football #WRAPUP #1SoccerArsenal #beat #Villa #Chelsea #Man #Utd #held

LONDON, Dec 30 (Reuters) – Arsenal closed out 2025 in emphatic fashion, beating third-placed Aston Villa 4-1 on Tuesday to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers, who picked up their third point of the season, while Bournemouth took a point against Chelsea, forcing a 2-2 draw after a frantic first half.

Man United are sixth, tied on 30 points with fifth-placed Chelsea.

At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal slammed the door as they charged Villa, ending their club-record 11-game winning streak.

Goals from Gabriel Magalhaes and Martin Zubimendi early in the second half put Arsenal in control of a match that looked fraught with danger.

Gabriel scored the opener from a corner in the 48th minute before Martin Odegaard slipped in a pass for Zubimendi to score four minutes later. Arsenal secured the points when Leandro Trossard shot from the edge of the area before Gabriel Jesus came off the bench to add the fourth.

Ollie Watkins scored a consolation goal for Villa in stoppage time.

“I think it was amazing,” Jesus told Sky Sports. “It’s always difficult to play against them… The mentality of the team is really, really growing and every game is growing even more and I think we win today because of the mentality.”

Arsenal top the table with 45 points, while second-placed Manchester City can close the gap when they play Sunderland on Thursday.

Villa are six points behind Arsenal.

It took six minutes at Stamford Bridge for Bournemouth to shock Chelsea when David Brooks grabbed the opener. Cole Palmer equalized from the spot in the 15th minute and Fernandez put Chelsea ahead with a shot eight minutes later.

Justin Kluivert brought Bournemouth level in the 27th minute to grab a point, adding to the London side’s unenviable record of one win in seven league matches. Chelsea are in fifth place, while Bournemouth are 10 places below them.

MAN UTD FIGHT

Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee made the most of a rare start by putting the exhausted hosts ahead with a deflected shot from the edge of the area in the 27th minute.

But Wolves managed to equalize just before the break thanks to a header from Ladislav Krejci.

Patrick Dorgu briefly celebrated what he thought was a winner in the 90th minute, but it was flagged for offside.

“We struggled the whole game,” United boss Ruben Amorim said. “We lacked creation… the offensive fluidity was not there.

“We didn’t play well. When you don’t play well with the ball, you struggle without it.”

Wolves have three points from 19 games, 15 points from the safe zone.

Newcastle United’s Joelinton scored after 65 seconds and Yoane Wissa doubled their lead five minutes later in a 3-1 defeat to 19th-placed Burnley, who are winless in their last 10 games.

Josh Laurent pulled one back in the 23rd minute, but Bruno Guimaraes sealed Newcastle’s rare away victory with an injury-time goal.

Everton moved up to eighth in the table with a 2-0 victory over former manager Sean Dyche and Nottingham Forest thanks to goals from James Garner and Thierno Barry.

West Ham United drew 2-2 with Brighton & Hove Albion in a match featuring three first-half penalties.

Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta, from the penalty spot, scored before the break for West Ham, while Brighton’s Danny Welbeck struck from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute but fired another over the crossbar.

Joel Veltman scored for Brighton in the 61st minute to secure the draw.

There are four more games on New Year’s Day, including fourth-placed Liverpool hosting Leeds United at Anfield.

Gardai have appealed for information about a car they believe was used to commit a double murder in County Offaly earlier this month.

In an update they say they are continuing to investigate all circumstances surrounding the fatal fire which occurred at a domestic residence in Castleview Park, Edenderry on the evening of Saturday December 6.

Four-year-old Tadhg Farrell and his great-aunt Mary Holt died in the fire and a murder investigation, led by a senior investigating officer, was subsequently launched.

Investigating gardai have now launched a public appeal for any information regarding a black Kia Rio Saloon car, registration number 08-D-24363.

It is said that the two men who carried out the fatal arson left the scene in the vehicle, which was later found burnt out in County Kildare.

“This black Kia Rio was found burnt out in Tipper East, Naas, Co Kildare in the early hours of December 7. The Garda investigation team is satisfied that no previous registered owner of this car is involved in any way in this deadly attack,” a spokesperson said.

The Garda investigation team say they want to speak with anyone who may have information about any person or people who had access to the Kia Rio between October 7 and December 7.

They are also appealing to anyone with knowledge of the car’s location or activities between December 1 and 7. Anyone with CCTV footage or footage of the car in Kildare, Laois, Offaly or the surrounding areas is urged to make the footage available.
