“RTE’s position is that Ireland will not participate in Eurovision 2026 if the participation of Israel will take place, and the final decision will be made once the UBU has made a decision,” said RTE.
“RTE is also deeply concerned about the targeted murder of journalists in Gaza, the denial of access to international journalists and the fate of the remaining hostages,” they added.
Before the Eurovision Song of this year in May, RTE asked the EBU to discuss the inclusion of Israel in the Eurovision SONG competition.
At the time, the director general, Kevin Buckhurst, said that he was “dismayed by news in the Middle East and the terrible impact on civilians in Gaza, as well as by the fate of Israeli hostages.” He added that he was aware of RTE’s obligation to maintain objectivity in his war coverage in Gaza.
Earlier this year, more than 70 former Eurovision candidates signed a letter calling on the organizers to ban Israel from the 2025 competition.
The next musical competition will take place in May in Vienna, the capital of Austria.
