The Washington Post has documented a horrifying killing campaign carried out by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the city of El Fasher, North Darfur, after taking control of it. The investigation relied on satellite imagery, verified videos, and eyewitness testimonies from the ground.
The findings reveal mass executions and ethnically targeted killings — among the worst massacres Sudan has witnessed since the war erupted in April 2023.
According to the newspaper, videos filmed and proudly shared online by RSF fighters offer a chilling glimpse of the atrocities in El Fasher, showing militiamen mocking terrified civilians before shooting them at point-blank range.
One of the most prominent figures in the footage is Brig. Gen. Al-Fateh Abdullah Idris, known as “Abu Lulu,” who boasted on Monday that he “may have killed more than 2,000 people.”
A humanitarian worker assisting fleeing civilians, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, told the paper that his organization had received numerous reports of men and teenage boys being separated from their families, beaten, tortured, and killed. He added that many accounts described hundreds — if not thousands — of civilians being targeted based on ethnicity.
Satellite images analyzed by the Yale School of Public Health’s Humanitarian Research Lab showed military vehicles near clusters of bodies and large bloodstains visible from space.
Additional imagery captured by Planet Labs revealed a series of burn marks stretching nearly two miles north of El Fasher, along with more traces near an earthen barrier built by the RSF to isolate the city and block escape routes.
According to The Washington Post, the field analysis and available images show “objects consistent with human bodies near the dirt walls, matching reports of field executions and killings of people attempting to flee.” The report identified five areas where the soil had turned reddish, indicating extensive blood pools.
The paper, in collaboration with the U.K.-based Centre for Information Resilience, verified three videos showing piles of bodies and burned vehicles. In one video, a woman in white clothing is seen lying dead behind Abu Lulu, surrounded by about 20 corpses scattered across the red dirt.
In another clip, the RSF commander is seen mocking a woman who had worked in telecommunications for the Sudanese army before one of his fighters confirms that she and her colleagues had all been killed.
A third video shows a soldier pleading with Abu Lulu to spare an injured civilian, saying: “I know this man — he lives in Al-Thawra neighborhood, north of El Fasher. Please, leave him alone.” Abu Lulu responds coldly: “I will not leave him. Our mission is only to kill,” before shooting the man dead.
According to the report, Abu Lulu’s atrocities did not stop there. In another video, he appears with a group of captives, forcing them to praise his forces and curse the Sudanese army before executing them at close range.
Sudanese medical and military bodies have reported that thousands of civilians were killed and others remain missing at the hands of the RSF. The forces have also been accused of kidnapping doctors and volunteers for ransom and cutting off communications with humanitarian workers after storming the city.
Meanwhile, Sudan’s Sovereign Council leader and army chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced that the army command in El Fasher decided to withdraw from the city “after the massive destruction caused by the RSF and the killing of civilians,” explaining that the decision aimed “to protect the remaining population and prevent further devastation.”
