The Palestinian leadership on Friday welcomed a joint statement issued by the United States and several regional powers endorsing a draft U.N. Security Council resolution tied to a comprehensive plan aimed at ending the Gaza war.
The statement, released Thursday by the U.S., Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Jordan and Türkiye, backed a draft resolution and the “Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict,” first announced on Sept. 29 and reaffirmed last month at a meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh.
In a response released Friday, the State of Palestine said the coordinated effort represents an important step toward securing a permanent and comprehensive cease-fire, speeding the delivery of humanitarian aid, and ensuring the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip. The plan also calls for the rapid start of reconstruction in Gaza in a way that restores basic services, prevents displacement, and protects Palestinians in the enclave.
The Palestinian leadership said the joint statement’s affirmation of the Palestinian right to self-determination — including the establishment of an independent State of Palestine — is essential to restoring peace, security and stability for both Palestinians and Israelis. Any political path forward, the statement said, must be based on international law and long-standing international resolutions.
The State of Palestine also reiterated its readiness to assume full governmental responsibilities in Gaza as part of a unified Palestinian political framework, emphasizing that the coastal territory is an “integral part of the State of Palestine.”
