The Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, in cooperation with Bethlehem Governorate and the Bethlehem Municipality, organised a tour of the city’s markets and oriental craft shops to showcase the city’s readiness to welcome tourists once again.

The tour was attended by Palestinian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Hani Hayek, Bethlehem Governor Mohammed Taha, Bethlehem Mayor Maher Qunawati, and senior security officials.

The tour covered various areas of Bethlehem as part of preparations to receive thousands of tourists following the recent period of conflict, and ahead of Christmas celebrations and the lighting of the Christmas tree.

The delegation visited the city’s main markets, stretching from Paul VI Street to Manger Square. Participants also toured the Church of the Nativity and visited several oriental craft shops in the square, speaking with shop owners who expressed hope for the return of tourism to the city and governorate.

Speaking to PNN, Minister Hani Hayek said: “Christmas represents Palestine’s message to the world. We are a people who love life and seek peace and stability. Through Christmas celebrations, we send a message that we aspire to live free from occupation and in dignity.”

He emphasised that the tour is part of preparations for the resumption of tourism in Palestine, adding that authorities are working with all partners to ensure its continuity and development. “Tourism is Palestine’s oil, a cornerstone of the national economy,” he said.

Palestinian officials stressed that Bethlehem’s readiness includes maintaining security across the city’s markets and streets, alongside the preparedness of infrastructure, hotels, and tourist facilities.

Bethlehem Governor Mohammed Taha highlighted the importance of these preparations, saying they present Bethlehem – and the governorate more broadly – in the best possible light to visiting tourists and pilgrims. He also spoke to PNN about the security situation, noting that cooperation among Palestinian security forces is key to developing tourism in the area.

The Bethlehem Municipality, which has announced its plan to light the Christmas tree for the first time in two years since the conflict, confirmed that religious and festive activities will carry both national and humanitarian messages.

Mayor Maher Qunawati thanked all partners for their cooperation in ensuring the success of the Christmas tree lighting, sending a message from Bethlehem to the world that the city is ready to welcome tourists visiting the birthplace of Jesus.

Meanwhile, Dawoud Salahat, a member of Bethlehem’s municipal council, told PNN that the return of celebrations and tourism preparations represents a beacon of hope for residents, helping to boost the Palestinian economy and support the resilience of the Palestinian people while conveying their national message during the holiday season.
