US President Says ‘We Have Nothing to Hide’, Supports Release of Records Before House Vote
Donald Trump has urged House Republicans to vote to release records in the Jeffrey Epstein case, a surprising turnaround after previously fighting the proposal.
The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on legislation this week that would require the Justice Department to make public records and any information about the investigation into his death in federal prison.
“House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files, because we have nothing to hide, and it’s time to put this Democratic hoax aside,” Trump wrote on social media Sunday evening.
“I DON’T CARE!” Trump wrote on TruthSocial. “All I care about is that Republicans get back on point.”
His message came after House Speaker Mike Johnson said he believed a vote on releasing the documents should help put to rest allegations that Trump had a connection to Epstein’s abuse and trafficking of minor girls.
Supporters of the measure have enough votes to pass it in the House, although its future in the Senate is uncertain.
Trump claimed that “some ‘members’ of the Republican Party are being ‘used’ and we cannot allow that to happen.” »
His comments also come against a backdrop of struggle within the Republican Party over these issues, including a growing dispute with Marjorie Taylor Greene, who until now was one of his staunchest supporters.
Politicians who support the bill are predicting a big victory in the House this week with a “flood of Republicans” voting in favor of it.
In his opposition to the proposal, Trump even contacted two of the Republican politicians who signed it.
One of them, Lauren Boebert, met with administration officials in the White House Situation Room last week to discuss it.
The bill would remove information about Epstein’s victims or ongoing federal investigations.
The vote comes at a time when new documents raise new questions about Epstein and his associates, including a 2019 email Epstein wrote to a reporter saying Trump “knew about the girls.” It was not clear what this expression meant.
