Each year on August 29, the world observes the international day against nuclear tests. This day is a reminder of the terrible effects of nuclear weapons tests and highlights the urgent need of peace. The day also remembers the closure of the semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan in 1991, which has marked an important step in the fight against nuclear weapons.

Today, when tensions between nuclear countries are developing and the wicks on disarmament (reducing the number of weapons in a country) have slowed down, this day has become even more important. The first nuclear test took place in July 1945 in New Mexico, in the United States. Since then, more than 2,000 tests have been carried out by the United States, Russia (earlier USSR), the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan and North Korea. These tests have left poisoned land, destroyed ecosystems, displaced people and caused sustainable health problems.

The Semipalatinsk site in Kazakhstan, where the Soviet Union has carried out nearly 500 tests, shows the tragic results, the big generations of people have suffered from cancers, congenital and infertility malformations. This day will remind the world of the human, environmental and health impacts of nuclear tests. He remembers the victims and survivors of nuclear tests while calling for stronger global efforts to prevent his increase in the number.
