Friday, August 29, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted an agreement between the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Japanese aerospace exploration agency for the Chandrayaan-5 mission, marking a historic stage in the space objectives of India. The program in the LUPEX mission (Lunar Polar Exploration) is a joint initiative aimed at exploring the southern pole of the moon and carrying out research on its hidden resources, including lunar water. The mission will be the fifth of the Chandrayaan lunar missions series.
Prime Minister Modi has announced the historical implementation arrangement between space agencies of the two nations during his two-day visit to Japan as part of the 15th India-Japon annual summit, where he kept bilateral discussions with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to deepen cooperation in several sectors, including advanced technology and space.
“ Symbol of the progress of humanity in space ”
Speaking at a joint press conference, Prime Minister Modi said: “We welcome the collaboration between Isro and Jaxa for the Chandrayaan-5 mission. Our active participation has exceeded the limits of the earth and will become a symbol of the progress of humanity in space. ”
After global recognition after the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 near the South Pole of the Moon in 2023, the next challenge lies in the deeper exploration of the lunar surface, in particular regions which can contain crucial resources such as water.

In an interview with the Japanese publication The Yomiuri Shimbun, Prime Minister Modi has developed India’s vision for space exploration. He also talked about collaboration with Japan in the Lunar Polar Exploration mission (LUPEX).
“The spatial journey of India is a story of determination, hard work and innovation of our scientists. From the historic landing of Chandrayaan-3 to the South Pole of the Moon to our advances in interplanetary missions, I am always happy that India and Japan are not the hands of the next edition of the Chandrayaan series. Permanently regions of the South Pole of the Lunar, “said Prime Minister Modi.
The mission will be launched by Jaxa aboard its H3-24L launch vehicle which will transport the Lander Lunar made by ISRO containing a lunar rover made in Japan. In addition to developing the lunar landing, the ISRO will also develop certain scientific instruments required for the mission.
