In the United States, two senior leaders are openly difficult by Donald Trump and his administration to withdraw them from their positions, organizing major legal battles. CDC director Susan Monarez, and the governor of the federal reserve, Lisa Cook, both refused to resign, insisting that the president has exceeded his powers.
Susan Monarez refuses to leave as CDC chief
Susan Monarez, who became director of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) only a month ago, was informed on Wednesday that she had been dismissed. The Ministry of Health and Social Services (HHS) has published a declaration on its dismissal but has given no reason.
Monarez, however, says that she is still in charge. His lawyers argue that as presidentially confirmed by the Senate, “only the president himself can dismiss her”. The White House struck, with Trump’s spokesperson Kush Desai, saying: “Susan Monarez is not aligned on the president’s agenda to make America in good health again … The White House dismissed Monarez in its position with the CDC.”
Force test inside the CDC
Four senior officials, Debra Houry, Daniel Jernigan, Jennifer Layden and Demeter Daskalakis, resigned to protest, accusing the administration of political interference and disinformation. Monarez lawyers accused the health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr of “the armament of public health for political purposes”. They said: “When the director of the CDC, Susan Monarez, refused Stamp, non -scientific improper directives … She chose to protect the public to serve a political program. For this, she was targeted.”
Lisa Cook takes Trump to the court for the fed attempted
In a separate battle, the governor of the federal reserve, Lisa Cook, filed a complaint against Trump after announcing that she was dismissed “with immediately”. The president said that Cook had distorted details on a mortgage request. Cook insists that allegation is baseless and says that Trump has “no authority” to reject it. “I will continue to exercise my tasks to help the American economy,” she said.
Cook’s trial maintains that his attempt at dismissal is illegal because the law on the federal reserve only authorizes the withdrawal “for good”, something that Trump’s letter has not shown. His lawyers declared that he had discovered the attempt to withdraw it by a social post of truth, and not an official notice.
Fend risk independence?
The case could prove to be historic. For more than a century, governors of the Federal Reserve have had protection against political pressure. COOK lawyers warned that allowing Trump to withdraw those responsible for political disagreements “would make the advice ‘independence.” The White House insists that Trump acted legally, saying that Cook was “crediblely accused of lying in financial documents of a very sensitive position”. Cook, appointed in 2022 by Joe Biden, is the first black woman to sit on the board of directors of the Fed. His mandate takes place until 2038.
